About Tilburg Chess Notes

Tilburg Chess Notes is an independent bilingual publication about chess culture in Tilburg and Brabant.

The publication grew from the feeling that much of amateur chess life disappears almost immediately after it happens. Club websites preserve pairings, standings, and tournament announcements, but the atmosphere around the game often vanishes once the evening ends. The long post-game analysis, the crowded tournament hall, conversations after midnight, the familiar club interiors visited week after week — little of this is documented with care.

Tilburg Chess Notes exists to pay attention to that world.

The publication follows chess life across Tilburg and the wider Brabant region: club evenings, local tournaments, amateur competition, annotated games, player stories, interviews, and the social rituals around the game. Tilburg is the editorial center of gravity, but the project isn't limited to one club — it aims to connect the broader network of chess communities in the region.

The project is intentionally editorial in character. It is not a federation platform, results portal, or official club website, but exists alongside those organizations as an independent cultural and journalistic publication focused on the lived experience of amateur chess.

Participation and shared documentation are an important part of the project. Readers are encouraged to contribute photographs, impressions, stories, tournament notes, historical materials, and annotated games from their own clubs and communities. Selected contributions may be edited and published. The goal is not only to report on chess activity, but to build a living archive of local chess culture.

The focus is on over-the-board chess. Physical places matter: club rooms, cafés, tournament halls, score sheets, wooden pieces, train rides home, and the rhythm of regular play. Online platforms remain useful for study and competition, but the publication is interested in the atmosphere around physical communities.

The publication is produced with the assistance of AI-supported editorial tools used in a transparent and pragmatic way. Artificial intelligence may support editing, translation, transcription, analysis structuring, and production workflows, but editorial judgment remains human, selective, and locally grounded.

Tilburg Chess Notes is een onafhankelijke tweetalige publicatie over schaakcultuur in Tilburg en Brabant.

De publicatie ontstond vanuit het gevoel dat een groot deel van het amateurschaakleven bijna onmiddellijk verdwijnt nadat het heeft plaatsgevonden. Clubwebsites bewaren indelingen, uitslagen en toernooiaankondigingen, maar de sfeer rondom het spel raakt vaak verloren zodra de speelavond voorbij is. De lange analyses na afloop van een partij, de drukte in een toernooizaal, gesprekken na middernacht en de vertrouwde clubruimtes waar spelers week na week terugkeren — weinig daarvan wordt echt vastgelegd.

Tilburg Chess Notes wil juist aandacht besteden aan die wereld.

De publicatie volgt het schaakleven in Tilburg en de bredere Brabantse regio: clubavonden, lokale toernooien, amateurcompetitie, geannoteerde partijen, spelersverhalen, interviews en de sociale rituelen rondom het spel. Tilburg vormt het redactionele zwaartepunt, maar het project beperkt zich niet tot één club — het wil het bredere netwerk van schaakgemeenschappen in de regio zichtbaar maken en met elkaar verbinden.

Het project is bewust redactioneel van karakter. Het is geen bondssite, uitslagenportaal of officieel clubplatform, maar bestaat naast die organisaties als een onafhankelijke culturele en journalistieke publicatie, gericht op de beleving van het amateurschaak.

Participatie en gedeelde documentatie zijn een belangrijk onderdeel van het project. Lezers worden aangemoedigd om foto's, indrukken, verhalen, toernooiaantekeningen, historisch materiaal en geannoteerde partijen uit hun eigen schaakomgeving te delen. Geselecteerde bijdragen kunnen redactioneel worden bewerkt en gepubliceerd. Het doel is niet alleen verslag te doen van schaakactiviteiten, maar ook een levend archief van de lokale schaakcultuur op te bouwen.

De aandacht ligt bij het schaken aan het bord. Fysieke plekken zijn belangrijk: clubruimtes, cafés, toernooizalen, notatieformulieren, houten stukken, treinritten naar huis en het ritme van regelmatig spel. Online platforms blijven nuttig voor studie en competitie, maar de publicatie richt zich op de sfeer rondom fysieke schaakgemeenschappen.
